Efter två kapitel är jag mycket förtjust i Paul Colliers sätt att uttrycka sig. Ibland kan man dock ana att hans vilja att placera sig själv mellan höger och vänster, är något av en strategi för att få större trovärdighet (inget fel i detta, dock!).

Ett exempel: Om tillväxt skriver han i preface så här (s. xi-xii):

The left will find that approaches it has discounted, such as military interventions, trade, and encouraging growth, are critical means to the ends it has long embraced. The right will find that, unlike the challenge of global poverty reduction, the problem of the bottom billion will not be fixed automatically by global growth ...

Lite annan ton (men absolut ingen motsägelse) är det i nästa kapitel (s 11):

While I was directing the World Bank's research department, the most controversial paper we produced was one called "Growth Is Good for the Poor" Some NGOs hated it ...

In strategy documents the word [growth] is now generally seen only in the context of the phrase "sustainable, pro-poor growth." Yet ... the problem of the bottom billion has not been that they have hade the wrong type of growth, it is that they have not had any growth.

The sunday times:

The authors’ method is objective and scientific, so that the human distress behind their statistics mostly remains hidden. But when they quote from interviews conducted by social researchers, passion and resentment flood into their book. A working-class man in Rotherham tells of the shame he felt having to sit next to a middle-class woman (“this stuck-up cow, you know, slim, attractive”); how he felt overweight and started sweating; how he imagined her thinking, “listen, low-life, don’t even come near me. We pay to get away from scum like you”. In half a page it tells you more about the pain of inequality than any play or novel could

I Guardian finns en smula kritik, dock inte av boken, utan av Japan och Sverige:

One question that comes to mind is whether the world's most equal developed nations, Japan and Sweden, make sufficient allowance for individuals to express themselves without being regarded as a threat to the health of the collective. Critics of the two societies would argue that both make it intensely difficult for individual citizens to protest against the conformity both produced by, and required to sustain, equality.

Ärade läsare, apropå ingenting undrar jag om någon vet något om kolonisering:

Stämmer det att britter bosatte sig i sina kolonier längre/i större utsträckning än franska kolonisatörer gjorde?

Det finns en briljant subtil ironi i inledningen av Sanna Raymans ledare i dagens svenskan:

Denna text har spår av genusperspektiv. Känsliga läsare varnas. Jag kommer att hävda att män och kvinnor bemöts och behandlas olika. Den med en mildare form av allergi kan dock fortsätta läsa – jag lovar att inte förespråka några åtgärder.

"Google hotar lämna Kina", också i svenskan. Bland annat har kinesiska människorättskämpar med Gmail-konton utsatts för spionage.

Intressant är att Google sedan sin Kina-etablering fått kritik för att tidigare accepterat regimens krav censur. Exempelvis ger en sökning på tiananmen olika resultat i och utanför Kina, enligt Wikipedia.

Men om Google hade valt att stanna utanför helt och hållet, hade företaget inte kunnat orsaka det rabalder som pågår nu (ur annan artikel i Svenskan):

Som en avskedssalut från Google.cn återvände igår sökresultat som Dalai Lama och pansarvagnsmannen från massakern vid Himmelska fridens torg. Det kommer inte att bli långvarigt. Den kinesiska brandväggen växer stadigt högre. Det gynnar partiets maktmonopol. Men det är samtidigt en reträtt från den öppning mot omvärlden som Kina skördat så enorma framgångar på.
